TFL CANCELS PLANNED STREATHAM HILL ROADWORKS MEETING, SPARKING FRUSTRATION FROM LIB DEMS

The meeting, organised by Lambeth Liberal Democrat Councillors Donna Harris
and Matthew Bryant alongside Hina Bokhari AM, was intended to bring a small
group of residents, businesses, and TfL together for a site visit and urgent
discussion about the extensive A23 works planned to last until at least 2027.
Instead, TfL pulled out with hours’ notice, leaving community voices unheard and
local representatives “deeply frustrated.”

“This was a chance for TfL to listen and learn—and they didn’t even show up,” said
Cllr Donna Harris, Leader of the Lambeth Liberal Democrat Group. “Local people
deserve better than this. We’re not giving up—We’re calling on TfL to urgently
reschedule the visit and engage properly with local residents.”
Residents have raised concerns that the consultation for the works took place five
years ago, before the pandemic and before significant population turnover in the
area. The failed Streatham Wells LTN has already heightened tensions around
traffic schemes, with many businesses and locals fearing chaos and gridlock.
Particular concern has also been voiced by members of the blind and disabled
community over TfL’s proposed floating bus stops—where bus passengers
disembark onto a cycle lane. Campaigners have long argued these designs are
unsafe and risk creating barriers to independence for visually impaired and mobility-
impaired residents.

Hina Bokhari AM, Leader of the Liberal Democrats on the London Assembly,
added: “TfL knows the importance of meaningful engagement with communities, so
this last-minute cancellation is disappointing and unhelpful. I hope the meeting is
reinstated at the earliest possible opportunity so that TfL can hear directly from the
people affected by these plans.”
The Liberal Democrats are calling on TfL to reschedule the meeting immediately
and commit to properly involving the community before works begin.
