Lib Dems fight for Lambeth Country Show next summer

On Monday a delegation of teenagers attended the council's overview and scrutiny committee meeting to call on the green party to honour its manifesto pledge and bring back the lambeth country show. 

Last year Labour cancelled the show,  and the Lib Dems are fighting to bring it back.  16 year old Jannez told councillors that the Show is a rare opportunity for teenagers to enjoy free live music and was an important annual event for her community. 

Responding, the Green Party Cabinet member said the administration wanted to bring it back, but needed to consult first and was looking at a smaller event. 

There was no acknowledgement that over 100,000 people enjoy the Show each year - ample evidence of its popularity.  The council meeting papers revealed that no costed proposal has yet been developed.  

When pressed, the Green Party Cabinet member refused to confirm the Show would go on next summer.  

Councillor Tam Langley, Shadow Spokesperson for Culture, Democracy and Inclusion, said:

"The Lambeth Country Show has run for 50 years, and is a joyful celebration of African, Caribbean and other local cultures.  It brings people of all ages and backgrounds together and builds community. Thousands of Lambeth residents enjoyed the Show every year, before Labour cancelled it last year.  Now the Green Party are stalling on their election promise to bring it back."
